GLP-1 AGONISTS (WEGOVY, TRULICITY, SAXENDA, OZEMPIC, VICTOZA & RYBELSUS)
These classes of medications are commonly used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and, more recently, for weight management. These drugs mimic the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which is released from the gut in response to food intake. The pharmaceuticals assist in greater glycemic control and redefining a more favorable weight setpoint.
MOUNJARO & ZEPBOUND
Tirzepatide is a pharmaceutical agent that represents an innovative class of glucose-lowering medications, acting as a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. The drug modulates glucose metabolism and insulin secretion. In the SURPASS-2 clinical trial, it exhibited greater weight loss efficacy compared to semaglutide.
CONTRAVE
This medication combines naltrexone, an opioid receptor antagonist, and bupropion, a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor. Naltrexone is posited to reduce food cravings, while bupropion is theorized to enhance satiety and suppress appetite. Although the precise mechanisms remain unclear; together, they exert a synergistic effect on neural pathways.
WELLBUTRIN
Mainly used as an antidepressant, Wellbutrin can also help some people manage their weight. It works as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor in the brain that can enhance mood and reduce appetite. It’s not FDA approved for weight loss but can be an option for those who are also dealing with depression.
PHENTERMINE
Phentermine works by suppressing appetite and potentially increasing energy levels. It acts on the central nervous system to reduce hunger sensations. Works well in patients with slow metabolism.
XENICAL
Also known as Orlistat, works differently than other weight-loss drugs. It targets the fat in the food you eat, rather than affecting your brain or metabolism.
METFORMIN
Primarily used for type 2 diabetes, Metformin can also help with modest weight loss. It works by reducing blood sugar and may also suppress appetite.
SGLT2 INHIBITORS (BRENZAVVY, INVOKANA, FARXIGA, JARDIANCE, STEGLATRO)
These medications work by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys. This allows more glucose to be excreted in the urine, effectively lowering blood sugar levels. The medication also has the added benefits of promoting weight loss and reducing blood pressure.
QSYMIA
This medication combines two active ingredients, phentermine and topiramate, to aid in weight loss. Phentermine acts as an appetite suppressant by stimulating the central nervous system, while topiramate further reduces appetite and may alter taste receptors.
VYVANSE
This medication has been FDA approved for binge eating disorder. It is thought to work by affecting neurotransmitters that influence appetite and impulse control, although the exact mechanism is not fully understood.
